A perfect alignment appeared out of my Hawaii Airline window as we flew out of Hilo International on the Big Island of Hawaii. All three of the volcanic mountain peaks rise above the cloud layer. This makes them the best place in the world for observatories. Mauna Loa (13,674 ft) is snow capped in the foreground and has many telescopes. Just left and behind it is Mauna Kea (13,792 ft) which includes Volcanoes National Park with Kilauea. On the right, in the distance is Hualalai.
